The Wild Robot MOVIE!

I am so excited to announce that Dreamworks Animation is currently wrapping up a feature animated film based on my book, The Wild Robot. The movie will open in theaters on September 27, 2024, and they’ve just released the movie poster and the first teaser trailer and announced the cast of voice actors. I’ve known about this movie for quite a while now, and I’m so glad I can finally share the details.

My love of animation is what first made me want to go to art school. I grew up watching classic Disney animation and going to animation festivals and pouring over the pages of books about the making of animated movies. In college I studied storyboarding and character design, and I even went on to paint backgrounds on an animated TV show on The Cartoon Network. So to see one of my books come to life as a feature animated film is a dream come true.

The directors of The Wild Robot movie is Chris Sanders, who co-directed the How To Train Your Dragon movies and Lil0 & Stitch, among others. He also co-wrote the Disney movies Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, among others. Those are some of the best animated movies to come out in my lifetime, so I know that Roz and Brightbill and all their friends are in very good hands. I’ve had many meetings with Chris and his producer, Jeff Hermann, and I’ve seen a lot of the gorgeous behind-the-scenes work that has gone into this movie, and I know it’s going to be a thing of beauty.

Voice Cast

Lupita Nyong’o as Roz the wild robot
Pedro Pascal as Fink the fox
Kit Connor as Brightbill the goose
Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail the opossum
Bill Nighy as Longneck the goose
Stephanie Hsu as Vontra the robot
Matt Berry as Paddler the beaver

The movie also features the voices of Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Thames.

My son and I read the wild robot and loved it. Now we’re on book two. But who’s Vontra? That must be a movie add on character right?

  2. BNB says:

How many more books will there be in The Wild Robot series? Is Protects the final one?

  3. Jack says:

Probably one of the Security Bots from the Final chapters of the first book.

My boys are so excited. They just came across the trailer on YouTube and guessed the name of the movie a few seconds in. You visited their school recently and my son says he asked you if there would be a cartoon released… 😄. The movie looks amazing!

Sooooo excited for this film. I read both books every year I taught 4th Grade. I just finished reading The Wild Robot to my 4 year old daughter. She will be thrilled to see the movie later this year. We’ll probably have to read the first book again this Summer.

  7. Aaron Sewell says:

That’s my guess. Possibly a replacement for the RECOs. I’m sure there will be many different things in the movie but I’m excited for that too.

We are so thrilled about this movie. I’ve often imagined what it might be like in a movie form. I have read the first two books many many times to my son. We’re just finishing up the third one that was recently released. All three are brilliantly written. My hats off to Peter Brown, what a beautiful creation. These books are a treasure. I hope the movie does them justice.

So Darn Excited! My family is A Big fan of Dreamworks films like Kungfu Panda or Madagascar! But this film is not only from Dreamworks, It’s also not a standard Hollywood narrative! Instead, we have a curious, Quiet, Thoughtful, Wild Robot! She cares about the animals and discovers the world around her! I think this is a more Beautiful look and Storytelling than any other Dreamworks film before. It’s also a Refresh after the Megamind 2 Issue! [Can’t Belive That exists]

Great Job Peter Brown and Dreamworks for your Creative Story of “The Wild Robot!” I’ll be Reading the book After the movie. I’m So excited to Hear Lupita as Roz, She sounds like a beautiful singer! I also heard She’s Doing traditional Voice Acting for Roz. Please Send me A Reply if that’s The Case!

This seems like the best movie ever! I’m such a fan of all his books. Peter Brown is one of my favorite authors and I’m so excited that he is coming out with this movie.

  21. Melissa Pearson says:

I am reading, again, the first 2 books to my 2nd graders. It is just magic. In the second book I always give a dramatic pause when the geese appear. Bodies suddenly straighten up, eyes grow wide, then all cry out “Brightbill!” Magic. However, I think the movie is going to ruin my Roz voice game. I read her in a robotic voice. Can’t wait to read The Wild Robot Protects.

  22. Kaden says:

  32. hog says:

the wild robot is better than anything in the planet. ❤️

  33. dawn lagocki says:

Will this just be on Book 1? We are about to start book 2 and I would hate to have spoilers from the movie! The books are just amazing. I read the series with my 11 year old years ago, and i just finished book 1 with my 6 year old last night! The books are always better than the movies (Although i’m sure this movie will be AMAZING) But i will hold off on seeing until we are through book 2 if there are spoilers or if it goes into that storyline!

  34. Annie says:

Congratulations! We are so excited about the movie but a little sad that they changed Roz’s design. We have grown to love your version of Roz. Will you be able to sell a version of your Roz in a toy form? If not, is there an official store that will sell Roz stuffed toy or figurine?

  35. Sarah Clark says:

Do you know when the DVD will be released? I make my son a Christmas box every year. He opens it Christmas Eve and it has pyjamas, a snack/treat and a movie. We love these books and we’re out the Toronto Indigo The Well signing. I really want this movie in Alastair’s Christmas box. Will the DVd or ideally Blu Ray be out before Christmas?

  36. Ben says:

omg so excited!! wish it came out way sooner!!!

  37. Ben says:

omg so excited!! wish it came out way sooner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Katie says:

From the trailer it looks like quite a bit was changed though. The book is a family favorite here, so we are little skeptical about the changes 😅

  39. Jasper says:

This is the best book and movie ever!

  40. Isaac says:

I love the wild robot that book is amazing I love it Peter Brown is amazing love his books I hope he makes a 4th book or possibly even a sequel to the movies!

  41. Camille Napier Bernstein says:

We saw the movie today with our teens, who loved the book along with us. We looked forward to a nostalgic event with our kids.

I was so disappointed and sad at the changes made in the film. It was visually appealing, but the movie was so loud and frantic and had so many chases and so much violence — and constant snarky comments from Fink and the Opossum mom. The movie seemed to address issues of loneliness or the burdens of parenting only by being cynical, never really leaning into what they mean and how they feel.

The book’s dangerous or frightening action was always purposeful, but the movie’s constant frenetic action seemed over the top. I’ve loved this book for its contemplative and heartfelt insights into love and responsibility and community. All of that was lost in this frenzied mess.

    • Peter Brown says:

I’m sorry you were disappointed with the movie! The big ideas and themes are mostly the same, but you’re right than many of the smaller details were changed. Many of the changes were necessary to make the story work for film. Some of the changes were a little frustrating for me. My hope is that the movie will drive more people to read the books, so they can experience my version of the story. That would be a win/win!

  42. Eleasha Thorpe says:

What a well made movie. I am only sad that they did not retain the virtues of the book. The book modelled love, compassion, enduring relationships, community, loving send-offs and celebration. The movie features bullying, exclusion, parent-child discord and relationship breakdown as well as reluctant co-operation and scheming. Peter Browns shining values deserved the spotlight. The world needs them right now. Do better on the second movie.

  43. Mimi says:

    I’m so excited.

  44. Ted Liptay says:

    Peter,
I saw the film yesterday with no awareness of your work, and stumbled across this website today while researching the movie. I have to say, I adored the film, and think you should rest easy in terms of any quibbles about how effective the adaption was. I’m sure once I get my hands on a copy of the book that I’ll agree with a few points made in the other comments, but they’re different mediums with different strengths and weaknesses, and, again, I thought the film was superb. The shot of Roz as a lighthouse was on of the very best I’ve ever seen, animation or live-action.
    Cheers!

  45. Sh A says:

I’m sorry, but I felt a lot was missed in the movie, in my childhood I read all of the wild robot, and a couple months ago I read the 3rd installment (it was great!), but when I went to see the movie I was severely disappointed.

Most of the story was just wrong, there was no loudwing, which I believe was an essential part of the story, and it seems that Roz does not get accepted at the right time, because she was accepted when she took brightbill in. What I am saying is, the movie missed a lot of points which we loved about the story.

My sister who is also a big fan of the wild robot was very disappointed and felt the same, she stopped watching the movie because she didn’t want to see her favorite childhood story destroyed in front of her eyes.

I’m sorry again, but this movie really had a negative affect on my nostalgia of the wild robot. I really hope the second movie follows the plot of the wild robot escapes, I don’t want to see such a great series’ reputation be hindered by its movie counter part.

  46. Ted says:

    Peter,
We met Roz and Brightbill and all last night for the very first time. Our 4 year old granddaughter said we had to see the movie. We laughed and cried, and were in awe of the animation. This will become one of our goto movies. We are now ordering all the Wild Robot books so we can embrace your vison of Roz and the gang. Its all a process. Thank you for enriching our lives.

  47. Rachel says:

My 7-yr-old son and I saw the movie last night! We had already read all 3 books! (He keeps asking if there is a 4th book!) It was so BEAUTIFUL! And I thought the casting was great, and the winter scenes were right out of my imagination! They did the best they could, I’m sure. But everyone knows the book is always better than the movie!
😉 Thank you for all your work!

  48. Lia says:

Me and my son watched the movie and loved it, thank you:)

  49. Kristy says:

Feel good, stunning visuals and heartwarming story, brilliant with this one!
